LEARN the GEON IDV

The GEON IDV is a free, highly interactive, true 3D, package to explore, display and analyse earth science data.

To learn to use the GEON IDV, first read How To Use the GEON IDV.

The GEON IDV is an extension of the Unidata IDV, and uses its controls. The Unidata IDV is described very fully in the Unidata IDV Users Guide. Click on the "TOC" icon on the top of that page to see the contents. The same material is included in the IDV program itself, under the main menu choice Help. See also the Unidata IDV Workshop Tutorial online. And you can join Unidata's email list servers "idvusers" and "idvdevelopers."

The web page Geophysical Data Types and Sample IDV Displays has details about data sources and use in the GEON IDV.

This tutorial is a little out of date due to changes in data file servers.

The IDV is deliberately made to display and explore any earth-located data, from National Weather Service radar scans as 3D volumes to earthquake focal mechanisms in the mantle. It probably can use and display your data, and provide features found nowhere else, but it does not know about particular kinds of data, or automatically make standard displays. It does not how know how you like to display your data. You need to know how to tell it what you want. Also it is a true 3D display system, so you probably will need controls you never used before. If it does not work for you, please read the instructions.

The GEON IDV is built with the Unidata IDV. The Unidata IDV does not have the displays for solid-earth geophysics provided by the GEON IDV, but otherwise the two packages are the same.
