Your Data: GEON IDV Data Formats and Access Methods

GEON IDV Data Formats

• Point data - values at random latitude/longitude/altitude(or depth) locations - see Point Data Formats. Examples of point data in the GEON IDV include GPS Vectors, Earthquake locations, Earthquake focal mechanims, and Tectonic plate velocity vectors.

• For data in 2D grids (in latitude/longitude), 3D grids (in latitude/longitude/altitude or depth), 4D grids (latitude/longitude/altitude(or depth) and time steps), the IDV uses NetCDF format files. See NetCDF Data for the GEON IDV (general description), and Using the NetCDF Data Format for Seismic Tomography (which also applies to all grids without time variations).

  If you have data in ASCII formats, you can convert them to NetCDF using UNAVCO's ASCII to NetCDF converter

• Seismic raypaths, tracks, trajectories, see Track Data for the GEON IDV

Data Access for the GEON IDV

The GEON IDV can access data from

• local files on disk
• files on an HTTP server -- files with a URL (data files must be in formats that the IDV can read)
• WMS (web map servers)
• RSS feeds
• Web cameras
• OPeNDAP servers
• listings in "catalogs." Catalogs are an online service with listings in plain-language categories, that hide file names and individual URLs of the files. Catalogs are informative and useful than URLS. Two catalogs are supplied in the IDV.

Data on a OPeNDAP server, WMS server, or on a catalog must be in the right format; not any data on such servers works!.
