Global Strain Rate Map (GSRM) Data and Displays in the GEON IDV
"In 1998 the International Lithosphere Program (ILP) initiated a new project: 'A Global Strain Rate Map' (ILP II-8). The mission of the Global Strain Rate Map (GSRM) project is to determine a globally self-consistent strain rate and velocity field model, consistent with geodetic and geologic field observations. " (from GSRM Introduction).

Bundle File:
Data for GSRM Strain (second invariant strain rate) by Kreemer, C, A.J. Haines, W.E. Holt, G. Blewitt, and D. Lavalé, and plate motions vectors relative to Europe can be seen with the bundle file http://geon.unavco.org/unavco/XIDV/GSRM_GEON_IDV_demo.xidv. Simply add the url of a bundle file to the IDV "Dashboard" window, Data Choosers panel, URLs entry box, click "Add source," and the display should be made. You will make a display like

This display also includes GSRM plate motion vectors, relative to the Eurasian plate. The earth strain image is transparent where data value is 0, allowing other data and map lines to be easily seen to be seen.

IDV Computations
The IDV includes computations, such as finding the horizontal divergence of a vector field.
GEON IDV globe view of 'horizontal divergence' of the GSRM 'no net rotation' velocity field, Americas. Red and orange areas are positive divergence (crustal extension or spreading), and blue areas are negative divergence, crustal contraction or subduction. Note that divergence is not the same as the second invariant of strain rate.
